Monash Launches Attendant Support Initiative
14 February 2008
People with a disability will have greater access to activities at the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) under a new program to be launched on 20 February.
"Monash City Council has been successful in obtaining $50,000 funding from the Department of Human Services to provide one-on-one support for the disabled to utilise services at MARC," said Cr Klisaris.
Currently, some people with a disability can only access MARC facilities if they can arrange for their own care needs to be attended to, often relying on family members.
"This grant means that for every two-hour block of attendant care at MARC, three people can be individually supported in the use of the pool and assistance in change rooms," said Cr Klisaris.
"This is a pilot program that will be monitored, assessed and evaluated in order to identify the community need," said Cr Klisaris.
The Cost for the Attendant Support Initiative is $20 per hour per person plus the MARC entrance fee ($3.90 concession). Sessions are held on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Bookings are essential.
For bookings, please contact the Attendant Support Initiative (ASI) Coordinator on (03) 9561 2111 or email marc@monash.vic.gov.au
