Mayor, Paul Klisaris announced Clayton Football Club the 2007 City of Monash Club of the Year at the annual Monash Sports Awards on 18 February.
The Club of the Year program has been running since 2004 to recognise the hard work of City of Monash Sporting Clubs and in particular the work done in relation to Council and the community.
Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris said that despite the current lack of water, sport continues to flourish and grow in Monash.
Established in 1908, the Clayton Football Club is celebrating its centenary year with an extensive history of providing the City of Monash with a football club that fields senior, reserves and under 18 or 19 teams in each football season.
The Club's successes include a winning flag in the Southern Football League in 2006 for the seniors, and a back-to-back flags for the reserves in 2005 and 2006, and runners up in 2007. For the past three years, Clayton Football Club has implemented a special program that allows local members of the community with a disability and their carers free admission and hospitality to home games.
"The tradition and comradeship of the Club is evident and we hope the next 100 years of the Clayton Football Club bring on and off-field successes down at Clayton Reserve," said Cr Klisaris.
The six sporting clubs short-listed for the 2007 award demonstrate the diverse range of sporting opportunities in Monash that cater for a wide range of people and different sporting and recreational interests.
"I would like to congratulate all six finalists who have shown a commitment to developing their sport and connecting with community groups," said Cr Klisaris.
