Flavours of Oakleigh Festival

28 February 2008

The multicultural community mix of Monash will be the flavour of this year's Oakleigh Festival at Warrawee Park, from noon until 6pm on Sunday 16 March.

Around 10,000 people are expected to attend the fifth annual festival, which will be the first event during 'Celebrate our Cultural Diversity Week'.

The upbeat energetic sound of Da Chos, a musical collective inspired and founded in Latino culture, will headline the festival's two stages of entertainment.

Other performers will include a variety of local community and cultural groups with the Monash Concert Band, La Vida Flamenca and traditional dancing by the Indonesian Club Melbourne. The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria Folk Group from the Antipodes Festival will also make an appearance.

"This year we warmly welcome the Antipodes Festival's involvement in Oakleigh and are very excited about the future potential of this relationship," said Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris.

Cr Klisaris also announced that the hugely popular, ' Flavours of Monash' would return to the festival in 2008. The 'Flavours' stage will feature demonstrations of traditional cooking and stories about the history of the food from the many cultures that make up the Monash family.

"Flavours of Monash goes to the heart of what the Oakleigh Festival is all about. It celebrates the City's cultural diversity and hopes to raise awareness of the value that new arrivals and our established multicultural communities contribute to the Monash community," said Cr Klisaris.

There will be a photographic exhibition on display, called 'Snapshots of Oakleigh', that captures the many faces that make up the Oakleigh area. Also on this year's festival program is a number of cultural music and dance performances, free children's activities and rides, market and food stalls and local community groups.

Monash City Council would like to acknowledge the media sponsorship support of the Monash Journal, Community Stage sponsor Garry and Warren Smith Suzuki and the Victorian Multicultural Commission.
