Monash Cleans Up 3.5 Tonnes of Rubbish

5 March 2008

Clean Up Australia Day proved to be a great success with over 600 volunteers turning up at twenty sites throughout Monash and 1200 students from eleven schools pitching in to keep our parks, waterways and bushlands beautiful.

Plastic bags, PET water bottles, aluminum cans, cigarette butts and polystyrene coffee cups were the most common items in the estimated 3.5 tonnes of rubbish cleaned up in Monash.

"This year we had double the number of volunteers participating, which has provided a fantastic result for the Monash environment," said Mayor, Paul Klisaris.

Around 350 bags of rubbish were taken to Council's Waste Transfer and Recycling Station, where it was separated into recycling and waste piles. Nationally, an estimated 800,000 volunteers collected more than 7,000 tonnes of rubbish.

Cr Klisaris said it was alarming to find that a third of the rubbish collected was drink bottles and cans.

"Monash residents are generally terrific recyclers but most of the waste picked up on 2 March was created away from the home. That is why we have begun implementing public recycling bins, which we anticipate will significantly improve recycling rates and reduce the amount of rubbish being dumped in the environment," Cr Klisaris said.
