Environmental heroes in the City of Monash will be awarded cash and prizes of more than $13,000 as part of the Monash World Environment Awards.
Sponsored by Monash City Council, VISY, Fasham, CETEC, Fonterra, Maroondah Credit Union, and the Monash Journal the awards are designed to celebrate outstanding achievements in the Monash community in the pursuit of a more liveable and sustainable city.
Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris said the Awards recognise the valuable contributions of individuals, households, community groups, corporations, small business and schools. Winners in each category will receive prizes at the Monash World Environment Award ceremony on 5 June.
"The awards also promote an increase in community awareness of the multiple benefits to be gained from community action, involving partnerships and sustainable environmental practices," said Cr Klisaris.
"In this era of dramatic climate change, World Environment Day is an occasion to remember that we have a duty of care and responsibility to our children and future generations," said Cr Klisaris.
"It is our responsibility to ensure that the health of their environment is as good or better than the World in which we live today."
The judging panel will include experts relevant to each category, as well as community and Council representatives.
The ceremony will feature a keynote address by Sarah Bekessy a lecturer in environmental studies and sustainability at RMIT University and a specialist in the emerging field of sustainability science. There will also be displays by community groups, local businesses and Monash City Council.
