Monash Awards Environmental Winners

6 June 2008

A fabric business, a primary school sanctuary, an energy saving home and a sustainable building are among the winners of the 2008 Monash World Environment Day Awards.

Mayor Paul Klisaris presented the sixth annual Monash Awards at the Civic Centre ceremony yesterday, the United Nations officially designated World Environment Day.

Councillor Klisaris said the awards also promote an increase in community awareness of the multiple benefits to be gained from community action, involving partnerships and sustainable practices in a wide range of projects and activities.

" The awards recognise outstanding contributions of individuals, households, schools, community groups, institutions, businesses and corporations that promote lasting environmental benefits for present and future generations," said Cr Klisaris.

The winner of the New Building/Renovation Award was Tony Green's Orica Building, an ambitious demonstration of a well thought-out, sustainable commercial development.

" The entry goes beyond the realm of architecture in considering landscape and integration of storm water wetlands. If every commercial development achieved what this development has done, it would go a long way to achieving a sustainable community," said Cr Klisaris.

The Sustainable Business Award was won by Sustainable Living Fabrics, a 40-year-old business that has changed their practices to be eco-friendly, which has dramatically increased the demand for their product.

Highvale Primary School took out the Community Award for creating a sanctuary to ensure that sustainability measures such as recycling, growing veggies, healthy eating and animal husbandry are taught to students. The compound consists of a chicken coop, frog pond, worm farm, compost bins and rainwater tank.

The Poppins Family of Mount Waverley won the Greenest Household Award with an outstanding example of a sustainable home and lifestyle.

" This household has demonstrated an impressive shift to energy saving with the installation of solar panels generating an average of 8.9-kilowatt hours per day, meaning the family now produces most of their electricity from these panels," said Cr Klisaris.

The Poppins family has also installed rainwater tanks, reduced water consumption, established fruit trees and has made significant effects to protect and improve wildlife habitat both within and outside of the Monash municipality.

In the Schools Poster Competition, the Junior Primary Award went to Ethan Asscher of Syndal South Primary School and Grade 6 student Isabella Blanco of Essex Heights Primary School took out the senior category.
