Dancin' in The Street at Clayton Festival

25 January 2008

Clayton's biggest street party kicks off on Sunday 24 February with a cultural mix of music, dance, food and fun.

The fifth annual Clayton Community Festival will take place on Clayton Road, between the railway line and Centre Road, from noon until 6pm.

Monash City Council will host three stages full of entertainment with popular sister duo, Vika and Linda Bull, headlining the main stage. This year's Clayton Festival will also feature acts on the Gary and Warren Smith Mazda Community Stage and FReeZA Youth Stage.

Drumming and dance workshops will he held throughout the day and free rides are expected to be a big hit with children and teenagers. This year's attractions include farm animals, jumping castle, formula one racing cars, Tommy the trackless train, a rock climbing wall and scout activities.

Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris said a feature of the festival was environmental sustainability and the first public recycling bins would make their official debut in the City of Monash.

"Clayton Festival annually attracts around 18,000 people and this is a great opportunity to remind festival-goers to be Waste Wise by using the rubbish and recycling bins provided at the event," said Cr Klisaris.

Last year approximately 20% of the waste produced at the Clayton Festival was recycled. The new public bins will be clearly labelled and will have either a red lid for rubbish or a yellow lid for recycling.

"The festival will also give Clayton traders, business groups and community groups a fantastic opportunity to promote their services and products."

Monash City Council would like to acknowledge the media sponsorship support of Monash Journal, Community Stage sponsor Gary and Warren Smith Mazda and FReeZA for supporting the Youth Stage and Visy Recycling.

Please contact the Arts and Cultural Development Unit for more details about the festival on 9518 3636 or visit MACD website.
