GirlsOwn: Monash's Young Women's Group

30 January 2008

Looking for a 'girls only' group to boost your confidence and self-esteem? Want to learn about communicating effectively and forming healthy relationships with your friends and family?

Monash Youth and Family Services are running GirlsOwn, a new group for young women aged 14 to 16 years old.

Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris, a father of three, said the program proved a huge success at a secondary school last year.

"As the father of a teenage girl, I know only too well the pressures and stresses that young women are under. This is a fantastic opportunity for girls to get together and share ideas," said Cr Klisaris.

"The GirlsOwn program was deemed a huge success when it was piloted with Year 9 students at Ashwood College last year. The facilitators received many requests from other students wanting be involved after positive feedback from those who participated."

Each week the group will meet to chat, play games, organise activities and enjoy snacks. The program includes a guest speaker and a final excursion to celebrate.

"Supporting the wellbeing and skill development of young people is of high importance, and a program such as GirlsOwn, that develops young women's confidence, resilience and self-esteem, is an excellent initiative," said Cr Klisaris.

The GirlsOwn group will run on Wednesday afternoons from 20 February to 19 March, the first meeting commencing at 4.30pm in Glen Waverley.

Those interested can call Saraya or Shelley for more information or to register on 9561 7359. Further information is also available on the website www.myfs.org.au
