Italian Not Lost In Monash Translation
27 January 2009
Monash City Council has ensured that services to Italian residents will not be lost in translation after unanimously voting to publish the Council newsletter 'The Monash Bulletin' in Italian.
Oakleigh Ward councillor, Stefanie Perri, who proposed the Italian Translation Notice of Motion at the 27 January meeting of Council, said that she believes providing information in a language of choice helps to build and strengthen a well-informed and harmonious community.
"From my discussions with many in the Italian community, I believe that this translation will be of significant benefit to many Monash residents of Italian background, particularly older residents. It's a terrific way for council to improve communication with the Italian community, just as translations for Greek and Chinese residents do," said Cr Perri.
Italians represent the fourth largest non-English speaking community in Monash and a significant number of Italian residents are not fluent in English.
"The Monash Bulletin is one of Council's most effective communication tools and will help the Italian community better access the City of Monash's resources, services and community information," said Mayor Paul Klisaris.
The Monash Bulletin is printed in an environmentally conscience manner and distributed to all residential properties. It is also available at Council service centres, community facilities, libraries, the Monash Gallery of Art and online in English, Greek, Chinese and now Italian.
To receive an online copy of the Monash Bulletin, please send an email and indicate your preferred language.
