Deputy Mayor Awarded Prestigious Scholarship
16 September 2009
Deputy Mayor, Charlotte Baines has won a $5,000 MAV scholarship to attend the prestigious Cranlana Colloquium next month.
The Colloquium is a week-long series of seminars that attracts leaders of government, business and the community, to define and understand the principles that lie at the heart of leadership and decision-making.
Mayor Paul Klisaris said that he is delighted that Cr Baines was chosen as one of this year's best and brightest to participate in the programme.
"Cr Baines is most deserved of this scholarship. Not only has she shown a strong commitment to civic service and social justice in the City of Monash but has also demonstrated both commonsense and a high intellect when called upon to make complex decisions that often involve competing perspectives and seemingly incompatible values," said Cr Klisaris.
"I am excited that the Cranlana Colloquium will give me the opportunity to expand my current research and also help me to further the skills that I have acquired as a councillor for the City of Monash. It's a great honour," said Cr Baines.
The Cranlana Colloquium draws its inspiration from The Aspen Institute in the U.S.A, which was established over fifty years ago to provide a forum at which leaders could come together to reflect on the underlying values of contemporary society.
In 1992, The Myer Foundation decided to establish a similar centre in Australia. The Programme commenced operations in 1993 and Cr Baines will join its distinguished alumni which includes former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, former opposition leader Dr Brendan Nelson, Ambassador Pete Peterson, Justice Michael Kirby, climate change experts Professor Ross Garnaut and Dr Tim Flannery, Rev Tim Costello and historian Professor Geoffrey Blainey.
