Monash A Top Recycler In Victoria
27 October 2009
The new Sustainability Victoria Local Government Annual Survey was released last week and it ranked the City of Monash in the top 5% of councils for the highest recyclables diversion rate in the state.
The survey, released just before National Recycling Week, reports on the waste management and recycling services provided by Victorian local governments for the 2007 - 2008 Financial Year.
Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said the survey shows that Monash Council is on track to reach the diversion rate target of 65 % by 2014.
"Over the past decade, concern about the environment has resulted in a massive increase in recycling in Australia and around the world. The City of Monash continues to be a leader in recycling rates and we hope to improve on this result even further in the coming years," said Cr Klisaris.
As part of National Recycling Week 2009 the City of Monash is offering free 'Follow Your Recyclables' tours.
Interested residents will have a unique opportunity to find out what happens to their rubbish and recycling once it is collected from their bins.
The tour includes a visit to the landfill site at Clayton South and a tour of Visy's Recycling Sorting Facility in Heidelberg where participants can witness what happens to each type of material before it is reprocessed into new products.
To book your place, please phone Anna Mezzetti on 9518 3423 or email annam@monash.vic.gov.au
National Recycling Week runs from Monday, 9 - Sunday, 15 November 2009.
