Making Bus Stops More Accessible

18 February 2009

The City of Monash plans to make bus travel easier for people with a disability by upgrading 116 bus stops throughout the city.

The Department of Transport will fund the initiative, which is estimated to cost $270,880.70 for the design, supervision, construction and installation of the sites. There are currently 25 accessible bus stops in Monash, which were installed last year.

Mayor Paul Klisaris said that Council has entered into an agreement with the State Governmnet for the work to be fully funded and that further government funding is expected in future years to continue the program.

"Council is very pleased to be facilitating this project to ensure that buses are accessible to people with mobility, hearing and vision restrictions. It will also make travel more comfortable, safer and easier for older people and parents with prams," he said.

It is estimated that nearly 20 percent of people in Victoria have a disability with 6.5 percent reporting their disability limits their activities, including travel.

The works at each bus stop includes the installation of Tactice Ground Surface Indicators between the footpath and road kerbing to aid visually impaired bus passengers when boarding buses. Concrete paving to kerbs will be extended where required to provide hard standing areas for people who use wheelchairs to make it easier for them to manoeuvre. The locations of bus stop flag poles, in relation to bus doorways, will also be standardised.

"Buses are an essential public transport option and people rely on them to get to work, school, to access health services and recreational facilities. More accessible bus stops will give people of all abilities a better opportunity to participate in our community," said Cr Klisaris.
