Making Bus Stops More Accessible
18 February 2009
The City of Monash plans to make bus travel easier for people with a disability by upgrading 116 bus stops throughout the city.
Mayor Paul Klisaris said that Council has entered into an agreement with the State Governmnet for the work to be fully funded and that further government funding is expected in future years to continue the program.
"Council is very pleased to be facilitating this project to ensure that buses are accessible to people with mobility, hearing and vision restrictions. It will also make travel more comfortable, safer and easier for older people and parents with prams," he said.
It is estimated that nearly 20 percent of people in Victoria have a disability with 6.5 percent reporting their disability limits their activities, including travel.
"Buses are an essential public transport option and people rely on them to get to work, school, to access health services and recreational facilities. More accessible bus stops will give people of all abilities a better opportunity to participate in our community," said Cr Klisaris.
