Monash Announces Environmental Winners

9 June 2009

The greenest households, businesses, buildings and community groups in Monash were announced at the 7th annual World Environment Day Awards on 4 June.

Awards were given in four categories and the winners are:
  • Sustainable New Building/Renovation - Harmony 9 by Mirvac
  • Sustainable Business - Green Champions Committee - Southern Health
  • Community Award - Syndal South Primary School
  • Greenest Household Award - Mr John Harvey of Glen Waverley

Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris said this year's awards celebrated the achievements of a diverse mix of residents, businesses, schools and community groups.

"Every year these awards become more important to us as we focus on a more sustatinable environment and prepare to meet the challenge of climate change. I congratulate the winners, who have set the bar high for achieving cleaner and healthier living standards within our community," said Cr Klisaris.

The Harmony 9 House impressed the judging panel with the idea of the 'House For Life', which is a home that incorporates an adaptable and versatile walling system that can be altered to grow and change with a family through all life stages.

The Green Champions Committee at Southern Health won the Sustainable Business Award for a detailed environmental plan to reduce energy and water use, which will see water saving of 5,644,000 litres per year and a comprehensive recycling program.

The Community Award for Syndal South Primary School recognized the school's demonstrated commitment to harvesting, treating and storing water. Their project is expected to reduce potable water use to 30% of current use and their technology may even be able to be applied to other institutional and community land uses!

The Greenest Household Award went to Mr Harvey for going above and beyond the call of duty to reduce his own carbon footprint. Not only does he use sustainable appliances and systems for household energy and water including solar panel electricity and hot water, he has used no water from the mains supply since the first rainfall after summer this year.
