Tool Time At The Monash Men's Shed

29 June 2009

The proposal for Monash to have a dedicated 'Men's Shed' is about to become a reality following a $50,000 grant from the State Government.

Monash City Council will purchase an unused Scout Hall on Council-owned land at 49 Bogong Avenue, Glen Waverley, which will be redeveloped into the Monash 'Men's Shed' by early 2011.

The Shed will be lead by the community and will include regular activities such as: learning new skills, volunteering, connecting with others and contributing to the community.

In Victoria there are about 70 'Men's Shed' groups and the Victorian Government Department of Planning and Community Development has contributed funds to build 25 more new men's sheds over the State over the next four years.

Mayor Paul Klisaris thanked the State Government for their contribution to the Monash Men's Shed.

"The Monash Men's Shed is a great initiative and it will provide an inclusive place for men of all abilities to learn and share skills and knowledge and develop social connections with their community in a welcoming and supportive environment," said Cr Klisaris.

Council will project manage the redevelopment of the hall and provide ongoing building maintenance. Glen Waverley Rotary, Waverley Lions, Waverley Community Learning Centre, Wavlink, Eastern Access Community Health, Interact Australia, Mount Street Neighbourhood House and Westpac have all contributed funding, in kind support or expertise to the Men's Shed project.

The combined contributions for the Monash Men's Shed totals over $100,000.

Monash Men's Shed members will be involved in the redevelopment of the shed space and will help with constructing the workbenches, other carpentry and improvements.
