New Dogs Off Leash Area For Monash

15 July 2009

The City of Monash has designated a new 14,000m2 area near the Glen Waverley Golf Course, as an additional off leash area for owners to exercise their dogs.

New Area - Cnr Waverley and Jells Rds

"Council has approved this area for off leash use as the result of a community request.
It will provide a great new recreation area for responsible local dog owners and their animals to enjoy," said Mayor Paul Klisaris.

There are currently around 14,500 dogs registered in the City of Monash and 30 off leash designated areas.

Council's Domestic (Feral & Nuisance) Animals Act requires that dogs must be controlled by a lead in all public places, except in areas designated leash free.

Dogs using off leash areas must still be kept under effective control by their owners.

A dog may be exercised off a chain, cord or leash in a designated reserve if the owner:
  • Carries a chain, cord or leash to bring the dog under effective control if it behaves in a manner, which threatens any person or animal.
  • Remains in effective voice or hand management of the dog so as to be able to promptly place the dog on a chain, cord or leash if necessary.
  • Does not allow the dog to worry or threaten any person or animal.
  • Always keeps the dog in sight.
  • Carries a bag, receptacle or other means of picking up the dog's faeces and removing it from the public place.
