The City of Monash will continue to pressure the State Government for better public transport across Melbourne's east by collecting tens of thousands of signatures on a 'Monster Petition' launched today by the Eastern Transport Coalition (ETC).
The launch was held at Monash University's Clayton Campus to highlight the inadequate public transport infrastructure in the area, which is visited by 53,000 Monash University students and staff regularly.
The City of Monash, Greater Dandenong, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Whitehorse and the Shire of Yarra Ranges are all members of the Eastern Transport Coaltion (ETC) and have joined together to support this petition and it's public transportation goals.
"If we can achieve the transportation goals set out in this petition, the entire community will benefit from improved access to Monash activity centres, medical and technology precincts, schools and our commercial areas," said Deputy Mayor Charlotte Baines, who attended the launch.
"The petition also seeks improved facilities for passengers and fully accessible public transport facilities and vehicles," said Monash's ETC Representative, Cr Greg Male.
The ETC advocates for sustainable and integrated transport services to reduce the level of car dependency and secure the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of the Melbourne's outer east.
Monash residents can sign the petition at the Monash Civic Centre, 293 Springvale Road Glen Waverley, until 7 August. Holmesglen TAFE students will also have an opportunity to sign the petition at the Waverley Campus.
