Community Information Sessions for Batesford Reserve Youth and Community Hub Project

28 July 2009

The community is invited to attend information sessions in August to learn more about Monash Council's exciting project to build a youth and community hub at Batesford Reserve.

Residents are welcome to drop in at any time throughout the sessions which are planned for Thursday 13 August from 4pm to 6pm and Sunday 16 August from 2pm to 4pm inside the Jordanville Community Centre at Batesford Reserve, Chadstone (Melway 69 H1).

"The community will be able to view the design plans for the new Hub and talk to Council officers about the timelines and process," Deputy Mayor, Charlotte Baines said.

"They will also be able to meet some of the community groups, services and agencies involved in this project and find out how the fantastic programs that they offer will benefit them."

The project to build a youth and community hub at Batesford Reserve is fully funded with $4 million from the Federal Government, $1.58 million from the State Government and $780,000 in cash and in-kind contributions from Council. It is also supported by Neighbourhood Renewal, local Neighbourhood Houses and community groups and agencies.

A condition of the Federal funding is that construction must be ready to proceed within six months. Council anticipates the new Hub to be completed and fully operational by early 2011.

"Our goal is to provide a 'one stop shop' for local health, family, youth and training services, adult learning and community activities for the local Ashwood and Chadstone communities," said Cr Baines.

One of the many benefits of the new Hub is that residents will no longer have to travel out of the area or long distances to access some vital allied health and community programs provided by MonashLink Community Health Service and Monash Youth and Family Services.

There will also be more opportunities to participate in education, training and community activities through programs at the Hub offered by Amaroo and Power neighbourhood houses, U3A Waverley and Gateway LLEN.

In addition to this, the Hub will provide a permanent home for the Ashburton, Ashwood Chadstone Public Tenants Group which offers the community support and advice on public housing issues, tenant's rights and other available resources.

There will also be shared community spaces for people of all ages to meet, relax and enjoy their local neighbourhood.

Cr Baines said the new Hub would occupy a small portion of land at Batesford Reserve and would enhance active and passive recreation by improving the reserve's access, landscaping, lighting and walkways.
