Monash Adopts New Action Plan For Young People

5 August 2009

Monash City Council has adopted a new Action Plan for Young People, which provides the opportunity for youth to have an active involvement in identifying and responding to their own needs.

At last night's meeting, Council endorsed the Action Plan for Young People 2009-2012, developed by Monash Youth & Family Services (MYFS).

The Action Plan for Young People 2009-2012 recognises that young people have an important contribution to make within the community. Young people bring a unique perspective that can provide increased quality and integrity to a wide range of local planning policies.

Monash Mayor, Paul Klisaris said that the Action Plan focuses on the needs of people aged 10 to 25 years in the City. This equates to over 37,000 people or 22% of the residential population.

"This Action Plan was formulated after an extensive consultation process with Monash's young people and others who provide services for them. Including young people in decisions that affect their lives helps to create a strong and caring community," said Cr Klisaris.

"The new Plan acknowledges that young people are our most valuable community resource and provides them with a voice to contribute to the future direction of the Monash community."

The Action Plan for Young People was developed following direct consultations with young people, Council staff, over 40 youth service providers, survey data collected at the Glen Waverley and Clayton Festivals, Community Satisfaction Survey results and data from the 2006 School Focused Needs Analysis Report.
The Action Plan has identified five key themes affecting young people and their families:
  • CALD and Multicultural
  • Engagement, Participation and Consultation
  • Constructed Environment
  • Health and Wellbeing and
  • Community Partnerships

As the City of Monash's strongest link to local young people and their families, MYFS will continue to play an important role by informing and implementing local plans and ensuring that their needs continue to be properly represented.
