Waleed Aly and Matthew Ricketson - In Conversation

5 August 2009

The Monash Literature Festival will bring together two great minds for a free workshop on writing for the media.

Lecturer and author, Waleed Aly will join former journalist, Professor Matthew Ricketson 'In Conversation' on Thursday, 20 August from 7 - 8.30 pm at Wheelers Hill Library.

Waleed Aly is a lecturer in politics at Monash University where he also works within the Global Terrorism Research Centre. He writes social and political commentary regularly in newspapers around Australia and his first book 'People Like Us: How Arrogance Is Dividing Islam and the West' (Picador, 2007) was short-listed for Best Newcomer in the Australian Book Industry Awards in 2008.

Matthew Ricketson is Professor of Journalism at the University of Canberra and ran the Journalism program at RMIT for 11 years. He was a staff writer at various newspapers and magazines including The Age, The Australian and Time Australia magazine.

Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said that the Monash Literature Festival is pleased to host Mr Aly and Mr Ricketson and invited aspiring writers to attend what is sure to be an intellectually exciting event.

"This year the Monash Literature Festival has focused on Australian literature and the annual Short Story Competition, which encourages new and emerging writers in the City of Monash. We are very proud to be able to offer such a high quality program of festival events and workshops to our residents," said Cr Klisaris.

This year's Monash Literature Festival for adults and young adults runs until 28 August and also includes the 13th Annual Short Story Competition, with cash prizes and book vouchers awarded to winning entrants.

Full Festival programs are available from all branches of the Monash Public Library Service or online at www.monlib.vic.gov.au.
