Recipients of the 2009 Sir John Monash Awards Announced
18 August 2009
Last night, Monash Council presented the annual Sir John Monash Community Awards in recognition of local residents who have given outstanding service to the City and its community.
- Danielle Rees - Young Volunteer Award (under 25 years)
- Karen Prokopiou - Community Leadership Award
- Maureen Atkins - Volunteer of the Year Award
"Community leadership is important and the Sir John Monash Awards allow us to say thank you to Monash's many volunteers. It is their dedication and hard work that helps Council deliver a wide range of social services to our residents," said Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris.
Danielle Rees was chosen as the winner of the Young Volunteer Award. In addition to studying for her VCE, Danielle still finds time to volunteer with a social group for primary school children in grades 4 & 5 and serves as a junior leader at a Christian Missionary Society camp. She also runs events at her school through World Vision, which focuses on raising awareness and support for communities affected by poverty.
"It is a great honour to receive the Sir John Monash Award, especially given that there are so many people who do great volunteer work within our community. It was a complete surprise to me, but it's great to be recognised," said Danielle.
"Winning this award proves that age is no barrier to making a difference. I couldn't even vote when I started volunteering so I was looking for a way to contribute. I feel very glad to have been able to help the people I work with and that is its own reward."
The recipients of these awards are selected by the Council of the City of Monash on the recommendation of the Mayor's Community Award Advisory Committee.
