Better Being - Get Fit for Life at MARC
25 August 2009
Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC) is offering a new pilot program called 'Better Being' that is aimed at getting people in shape who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
There are three main types of diabetes - type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes. The AusDiab study reported that 93% of adults have type 2 diabetes and the most recent data indicates that the prevalence of diabetes more than tripled between 1980 and 2000.
Mayor Paul Klisaris welcomed the new program as a way to educate and help people live more active, healthy lives.
"We all know how important exercise is to our overall health and wellbeing and I urge everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to sign up for this great preventative program," said Cr Klisaris.
The Better Being Exercise Referral Program is open to people aged 40-49 who have been identified as at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Participants will attend regular facilitated sessions over a six month period and they will also receive visitor passes to MARC to encourage usage outside of the regularly scheduled session times.
"The 'Better Being' program is affordable, fun and healthy, so pay a visit to your GP if you think you're at risk of type 2 diabetes and get moving at MARC," Cr Kilisaris said.
Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre is located at 626 Waverley Road, Glen Waverley . For more information about MARC's programs, please visit www.monash.vic.gov.au/marc or phone 9561 2111.
