Monash Releases Health and Wellbeing Profile

8 September 2009

Monash residents are living longer and healthier lives than the average Victorian according to a Health & Wellbeing Profile released by Monash City Council.

The life expectancy for both Monash males (at 79.6 years) and females (84.1 years) is around two years greater than the Victorian average. The Profile also shows that males in Monash have a lower incidence of the top five specific diseases/conditions that affect the health of men in Victoria.

This Health & Wellbeing Profile, produced by Council's Environmental Health Services, will be used to develop the new Municipal Public Health Plan.

Fact sheets contained in the Profile provide detailed information and statistics on the City of Monash's community, health, natural and built environment, social environment and economic footprint.

Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said that the Health & Wellbeing Profile is a valuable tool for Council and that it would inform future health planning.

"Health is the single most important issue to quality of life. Monash residents enjoy excellent access to medical facilities and information to make informed choices about their lifestyles," said Councillor Klisaris.

"This comprehensive Profile contains a wealth of facts about how we live, recreate, work, consume and transport ourselves in Monash. It also points out areas that we can improve including increasing our physical activity and addressing crime, gambling and other concerns that are important to our sense of wellbeing."

The new Health & Wellbeing Profile uses statistics from ABS Census data and the demographic statistics from economy.id and profile.id, which can be accessed through Council's website at Demographics - Community Profile.
