Monash Residents Save More Through Less

14 September 2009

Monash residents have replaced around 50,000 light bulbs free of charge thanks to Monash Council and LESS (Low Energy Supplies and Services.)

The light bulbs have already saved 28,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas, or the equivalent of removing 400 cars off the road permanently and Monash households have achieved a savings of around $5,000 by having to pay less on their energy bills.

The LESS program was launched in February and closes on September 31. It proved to be a convenient way to save money and also help raise community awareness of the simple steps that householders can take to reduce their impact on the environment.

"Council is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving our natural resources, so we're very happy with the success of this efficient, economical and educational program. The fact that Monash residents have seen a reduction in their utility bills is a great bonus," said Mayor Klisaris.

The energy-saving light bulbs that were distributed can last up to 15 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.

Replacing just one standard light globe with the energy saving bulbs stops 900kg of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere over its lifetime, which is the equivalent of what four trees absorb in their 30 year lifespan.

An average household replacing 12 bulbs would save the equivalent emissions of taking a car off the road for more than two years.

For further information or to register for the LESS program please phone 1300 855 362 before September 31.
