Ripples And Journeys - New Public Art At The Civic Centre

16 September 2009

Monash residents and visitors to the Civic Centre will soon be able to enjoy a bold and elegant new sculpture called 'Ripples and Journeys' by acclaimed Melbourne based artist Konstantin Dimopoulos.

Council funded the new $50,000 public artwork as part of it's 2008/2009 Capital Works program and called for submissions that would respond to the beauty, balance and harmony of the building.

Mayor Paul Klisaris said that the sculpture will be a wonderful addition to the Monash landscape and will be another artistic asset for the community.

"The City of Monash has a commitment to the arts and we are particularly proud to commission this wonderful new sculpture, which will draw attention to the superior design of the Civic Centre and will be a landmark in its own right," said Cr Klisaris.

The sculpture will consist of multiple red forms within the reflecting pool that rise upwards at different heights, from three metres to six metres, and will draw attention to the Harry Seidler designed architecture of the Civic Centre, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on 22 November.

The existing lights in the pool will illuminate the sculpture at night and provide a warm and vibrant glow to the Civic Centre.

'Ripples and Journeys' is representative of the strong eastern and western cultural influences of Monash. The artist chose the colour red for this work because it symbolises life across all cultures and is the traditional colour of good luck in Chinese custom.

Mr Dimopoulos has said that his sculpture "doesn't exist on its own; it exists in the peripheries of other objects and forms. Therefore understanding the site where a work is placed is an important part of the total creation."

'Ripples and Journeys' is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
