Forests: the forgotten solution to climate change

Come along to a Public Meeting about Forests and Climate

Forests play a crucial role in protecting the planet, and us, from the dangers of climate change.

Forests are the only safe way to store the massive amounts of carbon already released into the atmosphere. It is imperative we protect them so that they can continue to store carbon into the future.

Recent studies have shown that Victoria’s forests are amongst the biggest carbon stores in the world – logging them releases dangerous greenhouse gases.

Come and find out about just how essential it is that forests are properly accounted for in global plans to tackle climate change, and hear about the important role The Wilderness Society is playing in making sure our forests can be the carbon banks we need them to be.
  • When: Wednesday 6th August, 7:30pm
  • Where: Mt Waverley Community Centre, 45 Miller Crescent, Mount Waverley (Mel Ref 70 E1)

For more information, or to register your interest, please contact Seamus Balkin at seamus.balkin@wilderness.org.au or on (03) 9038 0888.

Scotchmans Creek and Valley Reserves

These bushland reserves are great for getting some really fresh air, walking the dog (or yourself), riding the bike, jogging or just 'communing with Nature'.

You can help preserve these precious places for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. The Friends of Scotchmans Creek and Valley Reserve works with the Monash Council to protect and improve these reserves with indigenous plantings, weeding, clean-ups and water monitoring.

Everyone is welcome at any of these events. Just keep an eye on our notice boards for upcoming activities, go to our website ( scotchmanscreek.friends.melbournewater.com.au) or contact our Secretary, Sally Walker on 9807 5576.

Or, you could join our monthly work party in Valley Reserve on the last Saturday of each month. We meet at the amenities block at 1:30 pm for a couple of hours work in the reserve.

We also have monthly meetings at the Black Flat Community Centre – two or three a year with speakers discussing environmental issues. We would be pleased to see you at any of these.

Don't forget that Valley Reserve is ideal for a barbeque. The electric barbeques are free and there is a covered shelter in case the weather suddenly turns bad.

Battery Back - recycling solution

Harvey Norman Chadstone: corner Warrigal and Waverley Rds

We're taking back batteries from:
  • cordless power tools
  • mobile phones
  • cordless phones
  • video + digital cameras
  • portable disc players
  • electric shavers
  • portable video games
  • laptop computers
  • remote controlled toys
  • palm pilots
Why are batteries bad for the environment?
Household batteries include toxic metals that can be harmful to people and the environment. When they're disposed to landfill, cadmium, mercury and lead can leak and contaminate soil and ground water. To avoid this it's important to dispose of all batteries, rechargeable and single-use, safely. By placing your used batteries in special recycling containers, you're helping to keep batteries from ending up in landfill and ensuring that the metals in batteries are recovered for other uses.

Why is rechargeable better?
Using rechargeable batteries reduces waste. Australians use thousands of tonnes of batteries every year, most of which end up in landfill. Rechargeable batteries can be reused hundreds of times and each recharging of a battery is one less battery to purchase and dispose of. This not only helps protect the environment, but also saves you money.
