Strategic Objective 1 - An Inclusive and Connected Community

Community Participation

Consultative Committees

In 2003, Council established the Older Persons Reference Group (OPRG) and the Senior Citizens Forum.

The OPRG was formed to:
  • Act as a consultative group to Council on matters relating to the health, safety and well-being of older people who reside in Monash
  • Provide feedback and advice to Council on its policies, plans and services that impact older people
  • Advocate on behalf of older people.
Projects undertaken by this group in the past include the Senior Wiser Driver course, seniors' membership at MARC and the 'Happy & Healthy Expo'. Current projects include the 'Positive Ageing' Expo, Quarterly OPRG Newsletter and continuous consultation on various Monash plans and strategies.

The Senior Citizens Forum consists of community leaders from the 46 Senior Citizens groups within the City of Monash. The group's members are predominantly from a CALD background.

The Senior Citizens Forum role is to:
  • Contribute to Council's overall community consultation processes
  • Consider and make recommendations to Council on policies that impact on aged residents
  • Encourage and support multicultural activities as a means of promoting integration of aged culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) people into the local community.

The group meets quarterly and invites guest speakers to their meetings to discuss issues and services available to their members. The forum provides an avenue for members to raise concerns with Council and provides an opportunity for Council to promote Council initiatives and services.

The Monash Young Persons Reference Group was formed in March 2007 and consists of 12 young people between the ages of 15 - 25 years. This group was created with the aim of informing Council of the issues affecting young people in the City of Monash and to ensure that young people have a voice within our municipality.

The group has identified 4 key priority areas in which they will focus their attention over the next 12 months: environment, health & wellbeing, interfaith and multicultural, and awareness of services.
