Strategic Objective 3 - A Prosperous Community

Economic Development

Strategic Economic Development

The Regional Economic Strategy for Melbourne's South East (2003 - 2030), entitled Prosperity for the Next Generation, was launched in October 2004.

The Strategy was developed by eleven Councils. They are Monash, Kingston, Knox, Maroondah, Whitehorse, Casey, Cardinia, Greater Dandenong, Frankston, Mornington Peninsula and Bayside.

The aims of the Regional Strategy are to enhance the level of collaboration between government, business, educational institutions and the private sector, to develop a framework to guide regional economic decision-making, and to identify and commence delivery of a set of projects to facilitate positive economic change. One such project involves raising awareness of business opportunities associated with the Technology Capabilities Alignment Project, which aims to promote technology capabilities within the south eastern region and link those capabilities for utilisation by local industry.

Monash has continued to support the planning and construction associated with the EastLink project connecting the Eastern Freeway with Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. This project is considered to be a key generator of new economic development and prosperity for metropolitan Melbourne generally and for the south eastern region specifically.

Monash has also continued to advocate improvements to the associated arterial east-west road links and for the enhancement of public transport services, as these are crucial to Monash's lead role as an employment hub for south eastern Melbourne.

Major Business Development

There was significant investment in commercial office and business complexes in the city, particularly through rejuvenation of older business sites and enhancement of business parks.

The 2006/2007 year saw the practical completion of the Australian Synchrotron, resulting in a clustering effect within the Technology Precinct situated around the general vicinity of Monash University and referred to in the State Government's metropolitan strategy Melbourne 2030 as a Specialised Activity Centre.

Office and warehouse development continued to expand within the Monash Technology Precinct. This includes large developments along or close to arterial roads such as Ferntree Gully Road, Wellington Road and Springvale Road. Accordingly, Monash continues to attract increased property investment and retains the headquarters of many Australian and international companies.
