Strategic Objective 2 - A Supportive Community
Sporting, recreational and cultural activities
Reserves and Sports Fields
Council is responsible for the maintenance of over 332 hectares of reserves and sports fields and 244 hectares of passive open space in the City.
Continuation of dry weather patterns has challenged staff to maintain sports fields in acceptable condition for their intended use. Grass species that are more resilient to dry condition and require less irrigation are being promoted to assist in the long-term management of sports fields.
Strategies were put in place to ameliorate the impact of the drought on sporting fields. These included resowing of sporting fields with grasses more tolerant of dry conditions, installation of a sub-surface drip irrigation system utilising nearby ground water at Scotchman's Run Reserve, water tanks at Glen Waverley North Reserve and Tally Ho Reserve and a bore pump at Scammell Reserve.
Council has installed rain sensing devices on all sports grounds with automatic watering systems. They will turn the sprinklers off when 6mm of rain has fallen and decrease the risk of over-watering.
Council's turf cricket wicket ovals continue to be maintained to a high standard and finals were hosted at most venues. Central Reserve was used extensively, hosting a variety of Cricket Victoria matches at all levels ranging from junior representative games to men's State second eleven and women's State matches.
The Waverley Gift was held for the second consecutive year at Central Reserve athletics track. The quality of the running surface on the day was much appreciated by organizers and participants.
