Chief Executive's Message
The City of Monash has continued to prosper during the 2006/07 financial year. The Council's finances remain in a sound position, there is strong economic activity in the City and our community surveys indicate that Council's services are highly regarded.
There has been sustained strong activity in urban renewal throughout the city in both the residential and commercial sectors. The demand for a variety of housing types continues to cause concern amongst the community, many of whom prefer to see the retention of traditional housing. However, market forces will continue to push towards higher density dwellings and our challenge is to accommodate this change in demand without significantly diminishing the existing neighbourhood character. The renewal of our commercial and industrial areas not only means the creation of further employment in our City, but also improved urban design outcomes with modern buildings replacing older facilities.
Council has continued to invest heavily in new community facilities and in the renewal and upgrading of our existing infrastructure, which is becoming more important as our assets age. Increased resources have also been directed towards maintaining our assets.
The ongoing drought during 2006/07 provided a major challenge to Council in maintaining the appearance of the City and the provision of recreation services for passive and active enjoyment by the community. In particular, water restrictions severely limited our ability to provide sporting ovals to the high standards we usually achieve and I would like to thank the many sporting clubs who cooperated with us to cope as well as we did. While we have embarked on a program of initiatives to ameliorate the impacts of the drought, ongoing difficulties will continue to be experienced unless the drought breaks. Council is also reviewing our operations to seek ways to minimise the impact our activities have on the environment.
I am confident that the City of Monash is well placed to continue to develop and prosper in our changing environment.
