Strategic Objective 1 - An Inclusive and Connected Community

An inclusive and connected community will ensure that members of the Monash community participate and contribute freely to their community, embrace diversity, ensure equitable access and strengthen links between individuals and the community.

1.1 Community Participation

Consultative Committees
The Older Persons Reference Group (OPRG) was formed in 2003 to:
  • act as a consultative group to Council on matters relating to the health, safety and well-being of older people who reside in Monash,
  • provide feedback and advice to Council on its policies, plans and services that impact older people, and
  • advocate on behalf of older people.
The OPRG has been active in a number of projects focusing on healthy ageing, including the Positive Ageing Expo, continuation of the Positive Ageing Lifestyles program and providing feedback on various Monash plans and strategies.

The Senior Citizens Forum consists of community leaders from the 46 Senior Citizens groups who meet quarterly within the City of Monash. The group's members are predominantly from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background. The aim of the Senior Citizens Forum is to advise Council on issues affecting the health and well-being of seniors from CALD backgrounds and their families living and working in Monash.

The Monash Young Persons Reference Group was formed in March 2007 and consists of 15 young people between the ages of 15 – 25 years. This group was created with the aim of advising Council of the issues affecting young people in Monash, ensuring that young people have a voice within our municipality.

The group has identified four key priority areas in which to focus their attention: environment, health & well-being, interfaith and multicultural, and communication. This year, YPRG ran the Natural Confidence a positive body image photography competition and exhibition and have been successful again in obtaining a Positive Body Image Grant for 2009/10. The group is also completing a website portal project to create an internet site for young people to advertise their groups and clubs or look for an activity to join.

The Monash Responsible Gambling Taskforce meets bi-monthly with broad representation from community members, industry representatives and service providers. This group is working together to benefit the community through reducing the impacts and stigma of problem gambling.

The Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC) has reviewed its Terms of Reference and expanded its membership to include a broader representation of the Monash community. The MAC was formally launched in April 2009 and has met on a bi-monthly basis throughout the year. The MAC has had input into the development of Council's new Multicultural Framework and Action Plan 2009-2013.

As part of our Fair Trade commitment, this year Council established a Steering Group, comprising of eight voluntary members in addition to a councillor and two Council Officers to help promote the benefits of Fair Trade to the community and local businesses.

The Environmental Advisory Committee consists of eight community members and three councillors. The Committee provides an advisory role to Council on environmental issues, including providing input into the Council Plan. The committee have also been developing projects, with a particular focus on water saving within the community. The implementation of these projects will be investigated in 2009/10.

The Disability Consultative Committee advise Council on access and equity issues relating to the needs of people with a disability. Meetings are held every six weeks to identify barriers, issues, address gaps in service provision and monitor Council's Equitable Access Program.
