Community Centres
The Clayton Community Centre opened on 7 April 2008 and has since exceeded all strategic targets. Last November, the Clayton Community Centre was the recipient of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Victoria) Design Award in recognition of the quality of the design of public spaces and streetscapes associated with the new centre.
The Wellington Reserve Community Centre, opened on 21 May 2008, is a modern, multi-functional, purpose built community facility on the site of the former Scout and Guides Halls at Wellington Reserve, Mulgrave. This building replaced the existing Scouts and Guides halls as well as the former Mulgrave Neighbourhood House.
Construction of the new $3.6m Electra Community Centre commenced last January and is due to be completed in December 2009. The project provides new facilities and accommodation for the Waverley Bridge Club, Ceres Calisthenics Club, Monash Croquet Club and a refurbished pavilion for the Dog Obedience and Doberman Club. Works include a car park, substantial new drought tolerant and water sensitive park landscaping with rainwater harvesting.
Last May, Monash Council received a $4 million Federal Government grant to proceed with Council's plan for a youth and community hub at Batesford Reserve in Chadstone. Together with $1.58 million from the State Government and $780,000 in cash and in-kind contributions from Council, the project now has the green light to proceed with the new major multi-purpose facility. It is also supported by Neighbourhood Renewal, local Neighbourhood Houses and community groups and agencies. Council anticipates the new Hub to be completed and fully operational by early 2011.
The Mulgrave Community Centre in Wellington Road opened in February 1991. It is utilised annually as a meeting place for more than 20 local community groups.
