Strategic Objective 4: A Liveable City

4.4 A Healthy, Safe and Attractive Place to Live

Municipal Public Health Plan

Work towards achieving the goals identified in the Municipal Public Health Plan (MPHP) 2007-2010 continued throughout the year. The Year 2 status review of the MPHP found all objectives have been met and actions implemented.

The year saw the following significant achievements:
  • Council has established a collaborative partnership with the Division of General Practice to raise awareness of immunisation.
  • Community Safety month took place in October 2008 with a number of successful events
  • A Community Safety Brochure developed and distributed to all households in Monash.
  • The Golden Plate Awards was run in November with 75 food businesses receiving an award. There was a significant increase in the number of schools and childcare centres entering the awards program in the previous year.
Internal staff functions were conducted during the year including a Pink Ribbon Morning Tea, Daffodil Day as well as various events to provide support for the Victorian bushfire appeal.
Food Safety

There are a 1163 food businesses registered with Council, including 268 takeaways, 154 restaurants, 100 mixed businesses/convenience stores, 88 canteens, 85 aged care, child care and hospital kitchens, 72 cafes, 58 bakeries, 37 food factories and 25 supermarkets.

Council's Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) conducted 2224 food safety inspections of these premises. 196 food complaints were received, 33 Department of Human Services initiated food recalls were investigated and 514 samples of food were tested for compliance with the relevant food standards.

442 (86%) food samples tested complied with the food standards. Overall there was substantial compliance with food safety standards by Monash food operators.

108 new food businesses were established, 20 closed and a further 58 changed ownership. There were 511 temporary food business permits issued which is an increase of 64% on the previous year mainly due to the establishment of three farmers markets in Monash.

Three (3) editions of the Environmental Health Services newsletter 'It's Your Food' were distributed to all food outlets.
