Strategic Objective 5: Responsible Corporate Governance
5.3 Development of Staff and Councillors
Equal Opportunity
Council believes that its employees are entitled to be treated on the basis of their abilities and merit, and to work in a safe, productive and congenial environment where they are treated fairly and equitably and are not subject to harassment, discrimination, bullying or occupational violence of any kind.
An education program continues to be held for Council staff providing them with full details of Council's Equal Opportunity Policy and Guidelines, Harassment Policy and Guidelines and Bullying and Occupational Violence. These information programs provide staff with clarification on what are the grounds of discrimination, what constitutes discrimination and harassment, employee and employer responsibilities and processes within Council for dealing with these issues. Training of staff in the Selection Interview Techniques has also reinforced our requirement for merit-based selection.
Training And Development
A comprehensive corporate training program continued which provided staff with the ability to upgrade and enhance skills and knowledge. Programs included Customer Service, Induction, Dealing with Conflict, Communication Skills, Leadership Introduction, Disability Awareness and Selection Interviewing Skills.
Following on from our corporate training program, staff have been encouraged to enrol in further tertiary studies, and support has been provided to these staff members. Courses undertaken include Bachelor of Applied Science (Built Environment), Holmesglen TAFE, Graduate Diploma of Planning, Deakin University, Masters of Management, Monash University, Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), University of Ballarat, Diploma of Engineering, Box Hill TAFE and Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety, University of Ballarat.
Occupational Health and Safety training continued for key staff across Council. A Professional Boundaries course was conducted for Residential Care staff.
Occupational Health & Safety
A further 12 staff were employed during the year under this program. This is now our major recruitment method to replace staff that retire or resign.
