Monash Gallery of Art

The Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) presented 16 major exhibitions and attracted 66,561 visitors during the 2008/09 year. Highlights included exhibitions of work by William Yang, Bill Henson, Tracey Moffatt, an international exhibition from South Africa (Then & now: South African photography), important curator exhibitions drawing on the MGA collection, and an exhibition commemorating the International Year of Astronomy.

MGA presented the finalists of the third William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize. After attracting 363 entries from around the country, the judges selected 34 works that represented the finest contemporary photography by both emerging and established artists.

Funded by the MGA Foundation, this annual event awarded a $15,000 prize to the 2008 winner, establishing it as one of the most substantial photographic prizes in Australia. The MGA continued its commitment to encouraging and exhibiting local community arts and crafts through the Ramp Gallery and Community Exhibition spaces. A total of 18 community exhibitions were presented in 2008/09.

MGA also continued its touring program of exhibitions, with Australian Rules: Around the Grounds being seen in a number of venues, extending MGA's reach to regional galleries throughout Australia.

MGA continued to provide a dynamic range of public programs in order to augment and enhance the exhibition program. In 2008/09 there were a total of 65 events, which were well attended by over 2200 visitors. A total of 82 visits by local schools and education groups were recorded, with over 2000 students utilising the Gallery's education programs, representing a 14% increase in programs delivered and a 57% increase on education attendance figures from the previous 12 months.

The Gallery continued to offer the Saturday Club children's program that attracts pre-school and primary school aged children and their parents. The Gallery’s Babes in arms program (a bimonthly coffee morning for carers and children) was also popular.

The City of Monash collection numbers more than 1,500 photographs and is valued at more than $3,000,000.

ConnectEast continued to support MGA through the donation of funds, enabling the Gallery to offer free entry to visitors. The Gallery also continued to add to the City of Monash's important photographic collection through purchased and donated acquisitions.

Donations of art to the MGA collection, through the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program, amounted to a collective value of over $400,000. These donations have significantly enhanced the Monash community's access to Australia's photographic heritage and affirmed the gallery’s status as one of the most respected photographic collections in the country.
