Municipal Public Health Plan
Achievements
Implementation of the strategic actions contained within the Monash Municipal Public Health Plan 2004-2006 resulted in a number of major achievements that have enhanced the community's health and wellbeing. These achievements include, however are not limited to:Health Promotion Programs
Monash Council recognises that childhood obesity rates can be improved through programs that encourage greater participation in physical activity and healthy eating behaviours. Between 2004 and 2007, Monash Council in conjunction with other partner organisations developed and/or implemented initiatives such as the Healthy Kids in Monash Project, the Paths to School Project and Community Safety Month. These initiatives have increased physical activity levels, promoted healthy eating and created a safer, more supportive physical environment.
Food Safety
Monash Council continued its Food Safety Training Program for food business operators from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Food safety education, surveillance and the enforcement of standards have seen a reduction in the number of complaints relating to food hygiene.
Food businesses have embraced the opportunity to showcase their high standards of hygiene and nutrition through increased participation in Monash Council's Golden Plate Awards Program. This program has been extended to schools and childcare centres and received a Heart Foundation Kellogg Local Government Award.
Local Law No.3
Monash Council adopted Local Law No.3 in February 2005. This Local Law provides for the suppression of nuisances and promotes a physical and social environment free from hazards to health and wellbeing. Local Law No.3 further strengthens controls over graffiti, noise and animals, to protect the safety and welfare of those who live, work or study in the municipality.
Immunisation
Initiatives to protect the community against infectious diseases continued and included the introduction of the Pneumococcal and Chicken Pox immunisation programs and the completion of the Meningococcal C program.
Tobacco Education and Enforcement
Monash Council continued its strong stance against the sale of tobacco to minors through the education of retailers and the enforcement of the provisions of the Tobacco Act 1987.
