The Regional Context
The Eastern Metropolitan Region consists of seven local government areas including the Cities of Monash, Whitehorse, Maroondah, Manningham, Boroondara, Knox and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
The 2006 ABS data indicates that there are relatively low numbers of Indigenous people in each of the local government areas, with the highest populations in Yarra Ranges (32.8%) and Knox (18.7%) (see table 2). In total there are 2,576 Indigenous people in the region, an increase of 15.6% between the 2001 and 2006 census. This figure represents approximately 9% of Victoria's Indigenous population.
Members of the Indigenous community in the region have established the Mullum Mullum Gathering Place, a Neighbourhood House in Croydon funded by the Department of Human Services, to provide programs for Indigenous people.
