Indigenous Framework and Action Plan 2007 – 2011

The Local Context

The aim of the City of Monash Indigenous Action Plan 2007 – 2011 is to develop and strengthen Council's relationship with its Indigenous community. The City of Monash is committed to implementing a meaningful and achievable Indigenous Action Plan.

The City of Monash has shown its commitment to Indigenous issues over the years, with the development of the Indigenous Action Plan 2002 – 2005, the signing of the Municipal Association of Victoria Cultural Diversity Statement and the adoption of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation's (CAR) vision. In 2002 Council also unveiled a commemorative plaque, which is located on the grounds of the Civic Centre in Glen Waverley, recognising former land occupation by the Kulin Nation.

The Municipal Association of Victoria Cultural Diversity statement that was adopted at Council's meeting on 25 November 1998 is as follows:
Local Government in Victoria:
  • Confirms its commitment to the right of all Victorians to enjoy equal rights and be treated with equal respect regardless of race, colour, creed or origin;
  • Confirms its commitment to the process of reconciliation with Indigenous people on the context of readdressing their social and economic disadvantage;
  • Confirms its commitment to maintaining Victoria as a culturally diverse, tolerant and open society, united by an overriding commitment to our nation and its democratic institutions and values; and
  • Denounces racial intolerance in any form as incompatible with the kind of society we are and want to be.”
Council formally adopted the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation's (CAR) vision at its meeting in 24 June 2002;
A united Australia which represents this land of ours, values the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, and provides justice and equity for all.

The adoption of the City of Monash Indigenous Action Plan 2007 – 2011 is consistent with both of these statements.
