3. Promote and Celebrate Indigenous Culture

Objective: To promote and celebrate Indigenous activities in the City of Monash

Strategy Action Timelines Responsibility
Actively promote Indigenous culture in the City of Monash and surrounds Continue the development and presentation of arts and cultural activities by Indigenous artists and organisations Ongoing Community Information & Arts
Continue to produce 'Arts Life' to celebrate and showcase our local artists and organisations, including Indigenous artists Ongoing Community Information & Arts
Continue to investigate opportunities to acquire photographs by Indigenous photographers, in accordance with the MGA acquisition policy Ongoing Monash Gallery of Art
Promote Indigenous naming and signage of public places and use of Indigenous plant species Investigate, via appropriate channels, opportunities to provide Indigenous names to streets, parks, public spaces, physical structures and facilities Ongoing Asset Management
Continue to promote the use of Indigenous plant species Ongoing Urban Design
Where there is prima facie evidence or likelihood that a site may have been used by Indigenous ancestors, conduct an archaeological survey of the site Ongoing Urban Design
Improve understanding in the City of Monash about the cultural values, history, beliefs and customs of Indigenous people Continue to promote Indigenous heritage through the acquisition of resources for the library collection and take advantage of touring displays as the opportunities arise Ongoing Community Information & Arts
Investigate opportunities to display appropriate Indigenous signage that welcomes Indigenous people to the Monash Civic Centre December 2007 Corporate Administration
Fly the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags in accordance with relevant flag flying protocols during NAIDOC week and Reconciliation Week Ongoing Corporate Administration
At the discretion of the Mayor of the day, incorporate an Indigenous welcome into citizenship ceremonies, major festivals and events Ongoing Corporate Administration
Continue the coordination and promotion of Indigenous culture and heritage through existing Council structures:
  • Library services:
    • Purchase resources regarding Indigenous issues
    • Indigenous story telling sessions during relevant celebrations
  • Early Childhood Program:
    • Continue to promote the Indigenous Resource Kit for use by Commonwealth approved childcare services
    • Invite the Department of Human Services Eastern Metropolitan Region Koori Early Childhood Field Officers to conduct Indigenous story telling sessions
  • Cultural activities and events:
    • Continue to support NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week Activities
    • Monash Gallery to continue the promotion of works by Indigenous artists as opportunities arise
