Monash Club Highlights

Waverley Softball Association

Amongst the many tournaments that Waverley Softball Association has run in 2007-2008 the biggest and the best was 'The Easter Carnival' hosted over the four day Easter break.

The carnival (seen by many to be the largest and best annual girls softball carnival in the country) saw approximately 280 games of softball played over the four days with 41 entries from 5 states and territories across the country in U12, U14, U16 and U19 girl's grades. The event attracted over 500 athletes, at least 1000 spectators, and several hundred dedicated volunteers to assist with the running of the tournament.

Some of the most talented players in their age groups from across the country, including several U19 Australian representative players, and was run in perfect weather, in great spirits and with outstanding quality of softball being played all long weekend.

Winners of the Waverley Easter Softball Carnival in each grade were as follows:
  • U12 - Waverley Softball Association
  • U14 - Canberra
  • U16 - Western Sydney Academy of Sport
  • U19 - Canberra

It is all a go for the Association, with the exciting announcement that two current members of Eastern Raiders Softball Club, registered with the Waverley Softball Association have gained selection in the Australian Olympic team competing at the Beijing Olympics in August this year.

Selected in the Australian Softball Olympic Team were Justine Smethurst, her first time to represent Australia at an Olympics, and Natalie Titcume, who has represented Australia at Sydney 2000 winning Bronze, and Athens 2004 winning silver.

Waverley Softball Association is extremely proud of these girls who have worked so hard over the years to gain Olympic selection.

Waverley Basketball Scores World First!

The Waverley Basketball Association is the first association in the world to provide web-digital scoring systems for their patrons at the Waverley Basketball Centre in Chadstone.

In association with Jamware online, Waverley installed state of the art touchscreen monitors and new score benches on each of their six courts at the Waverley stadium. The monitors eliminate the need for traditional score sheets, and data collected court side is streamed straight to the Waverley website www.waverleybasketball.com.

WBA President Mike Bullock says "This is the first of many steps we will be taking to give our our participants at the Waverley Basketball Centre the latest technology available to basketball competitions. In addition to the touchscreen monitors, we offer on line results of game statistics throughout the year, and live streaming whilst games are being played. We will soon be adding on line digital scoreboards at courtside as well".

Brett Guthrie, Jamware Online Marketing Director, said "These systems represent the future of domestic sport, we’re happy to be working with WBA to create new and exciting digital services for players".

Freeway Twilight Touch Football Competition

This was the first year that the Freeway Twilight competition had run. Touch Football Victoria was very excited to bring a competition to the Waverley area.

We saw a large number of teams show interest and these teams all had a great attitude and played the game in great spirit. One person alone managed to gather up enough players for 3 teams! His teams were made up nearly all family members – encompassing young juniors as young as 13 who showed that you don't have to be an experienced senior player to be able to side step someone.

Touch Football Victoria is looking forward to teams stepping on the field next summer at Freeway Reserve.
