Waverley Little Athletics has been announced as Champion Club winner of the Victorian Smartplay Sport Safety Champion Awards 2009.
The Awards, run by Smartplay, Sports Medicine Australia's sports injury prevention program funded by VicHealth and the Department of Planning and Community Development (Sport and Recreation Victoria), searched state wide for community sporting clubs with the top sport safety strategies.
Waverley Little Athletics beat out entrants to win the $500 cash prize with their dedication to sports safety. As a finalist, Waverley Little Athletics had already won a fully stocked first aid kit valued at $200, an invitation to a Smartplay Injury Prevention and Club Development Workshop and Sport Safety Champion Awards Ceremony, and a Smartplay Poster Kit for their entry.
"Waverley Little Athletics was awarded with the title of Champion Club for their work in providing players with qualified coaches who run training sessions including warm up, age specific activity sessions, cool down and stretching; undertaking risk assessment of the arena and track prior to the start of weekly competitions; enforcing an extreme heat policy; using an emergency management plan; scheduling events to minimise injuries; and allowing frequent breaks to allow for rest and rehydration," said Sports Medicine Australia's Executive Officer, Ms Lynne Sheehan.
"Smartplay would like to thank all those who entered the Victorian Smartplay Sport Safety Champion Awards for 2009. It is great to see community sporting clubs and individuals working to ensure the risk of sports injuries are reduced," said Ms Sheehan.
"Community sporting clubs and individuals have played a key role in the success of the Smartplay program over the past 10 years and the program looks forward to continuing to educate sports personnel on the importance of sports safety," said Ms Sheehan.
The Awards were open to not-for-profit community sporting clubs affiliated with a state sporting association.
