Litter Management

Litter is an important issue for sports clubs and grounds, but often difficult to find an effective way to control. The following are some suggestions to help implement a successful litter management strategy at your sports facility.

• Commitment by grounds tenants, managing agents and/or owners to reducing litter - all must play integral part in research and planning. Clear indications of responsibility and penalties - in Club's terms of agreement or other signed-off document. For example a roster system for collecting litter and placing bins before/after games, when to put bins out for collection, what options are available if a collection is needed before collection day, what rates will be charged for additional cleaning or collections if they are deemed required.
• Adequate bin systems - including number of bins, signage, placement of bins, and storage areas.
• Adequate collection - Whether they receive a Council or private collection of waste and recyclables, Clubs should be made aware of how much they are paying for these services and be charged for additional services if they are required.
• Clear communications - A consistent message that can tie into broader programs for instant recognition by players and fans will help ensure litter management across a range of grounds.
