MONASH SPORTSCENE

A Note from Nev

Going into the last week in May all grounds have had fertiliser applied and the weeds have been sprayed. The grounds that were over sown are reasonable considering we had minimal rain to help establishment. We were still applying irrigation to grounds nominated with the water authority to hold the soil together during May, which is normally unheard of, and we were able to utilise the bore water at Scammell Reserve. The newly planted couch ground at Capital Reserve required a bit of help too.

The difference in wear and tear on grounds for seniors versus juniors is notable. Capital and Brentwood Reserve's warm season grass establishment was roughly the same, however Capital is showing significantly more wear, hopefully it can survive the footy season and gain further depth in the roots through the summer to give it more resilience for future winter seasons. All Clubs can help themselves in changing simple practices such as varying their training areas and avoiding the centre square and goal mouth where staff are noticing worn out areas closest to the pavilion and pristine areas away from the rooms.

The grounds have been getting a roller on them or mown alternatively. Apart from a bit of Dolomite & Gypsum I don't envisage applying much to the grounds over the next month or so. Depending on the rainfall we get the Earthquake machine is at the ready to assist with easing any drainage issues that may eventuate.

Neville Arathoon, Sports Maintenance Foreperson with Council Horticultural Services, coordinates a team of 5 Curators and 3 tractor operators who work hard to keep the City of Monash sports grounds going season to season. Neville has over 40 years experience in the industry and has been with Monash Council for 18 years.
