3. Policy Context
The Monash Disability Access and Inclusion Framework and Action Plan 2009-2013 is guided by the following policies and legislation:3.1 Local Government
Local Government Act 1989
Local Government in Victoria is administered under the Local Government Act 1989. Local Government is responsible for providing a range of environmental, economic and social services and ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of the local community.
Specifically the role of Council includes:
- Acting as a representative government by taking into account the diverse needs of the local community in decision-making
- Providing leadership by establishing strategic objectives and monitoring their achievement
- Maintaining the viability of the Council by ensuring that resources are managed in a responsible and accountable manner Advocating the interests of the local community to other communities and governments
- Acting as a responsible partner in government by taking into account the needs of other communities
- Fostering community cohesion and encouraging active participation in civic life
