Asbestos

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is the name given to a group of fibrous silicate minerals that occur naturally in the environment. Asbestos fibres are typically found in building products used in Australia from the1950's to the 1990's and in some car parts.

Asbestos was originally used because of its durability, fire resistance and excellent insulating properties. However, asbestos has since been found to cause a number of diseases resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Australians each year. Since 31 December 2003, all new products containing asbestos have been banned.

With many Australians now tackling do-it-yourself home projects, more people are becoming exposed to the dangers of asbestos.
