Target - 'Compostable' bag
'Compostable' bags
New compostable disposable bags are being sold at stores such as Target as an environmentally friendly replacement to plastic bags. These bags are labelled as compostable and suitable for inclusion in Council garden organics collections.
Whilst it is encouraging to see these larger stores taking action to provide eco-friendly products to consumers, residents should NOT place these bags in their green waste bins.
Although the bags will break down into organic material eventually, they do not break down quickly enough for the green waste processing equipment to handle. The equipment will get clogged with shreds of bags, resulting in hold ups and damage to composting facilities.
These bags can be used to hold rubbish items and placed in the rubbish bin. They will break down quicker in landfill than regular plastic bags, resulting in less litter and pollution.
