Pampering Ourselves

Mandy Lawless

So often in the "blur" which daily parenting can sometimes be, we tend to forget about looking after ourselves... as mothers, partners and employees. We find ourselves rushing from one task to another with little thought for our own health and well being. It can be a recipe for stress, reduced resistance to illness and loss of enjoyment in each day.

To continue to be available to our children, partners, bosses etc lets take time out to "smell the roses". Let's plan to do something, which we really enjoy, at least once a week. It doesn't have to take a lot of time!
Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
  • Sit in the back garden with a cuppa while the kids are asleep - take a book.
  • Record a favourite TV program and watch when you get a chance, put on a favourite CD.
  • Investigate what the local library has to offer or arrange to meet a friend for coffee.
  • Join a gym, yoga class or swim centre with a crèche.
  • Ask your partner, mother or friend to mind the baby while you have a sleep or walk or that long hot bath.
  • Plan a "date" with your partner or a friend to go out to a quiet dinner.
  • If you are feeling a bit shut in at home, walk to the local shops or parks - there's bound to be another parent there looking for a chat.
  • Book in for a haircut, massage or manicure - whatever makes you feel good.
  • Drive to a local beach on a fine day for a change of scene.
  • See a movie at a "Mums and Bubs" Session - Village & Hoyts have weekly screenings where sound and lights are adjusted to suit littlies.

HAPPY PAMPERING!
