Why should I read to my baby?
Reading aloud with your baby has a number of benefits for both of you, not least being that it’s fun! It also enhances the bond between parent and child.
Other benefits include:
- introducing babies to the rhythm of language
- promoting the skill of word association from an early age
- enhancing and stimulating the baby's senses
- good, clear pictures
- pictures that use strong primary colours
- a simple storyline, up to one line per page, and give lots of opportunity for pointing out objects or people
- repeating words or phrases and / or noises your child can make with you.
This encourages your child to join in the fun!
Some fun books to read with babies:- Jeanette Rowe's Yoyo series, Whose? Series
- Dick Bruna's Miffy series
- Lucy Cousins' Maisy series
Ask the Youth Services Librarian at your local branch of Monash Public Library Service for advice and remember to
