What is the difference between Preschool and Kindergarten?
Jennifer Sebire
There is no difference – some centres call themselves preschools and others call themselves kindergartens.
Preschools/kindergartens, in the City of Monash, offer programs for both four-year-old children, which are partially funded by the State Government, and three-year-old children.
It is recommended that parents enrol their child for four year old preschool in Council's Central Enrolment Scheme – (call Judy Allen on 9518 3530) - as soon as possible after their child turns 18 months. To be eligible for a funded place in four-year-old preschool, children must turn four years old on or before 30 April of the year they attend preschool.
For a child to be eligible for three-year-old preschool, they must have actually turned three before they can commence at the program. So if your child turns three in the months February and up to 30 April, then they would be commencing in a group that is already established and settled, which may put added pressure on them. You might like to consider what that will mean to your child.
For further information concerning your child starting three-year-old preschool, please feel free to speak to your local preschool teacher.
