Our eating habits are changing. Australians are becoming more health conscious and at the same time, increasing numbers of meals are being prepared and consumed away from the home. It is important that food premises play a significant role in promoting good health.

The Golden Plate is an annual awards program that recognises food premises throughout Monash that are leading the trend towards better and safer standards of nutrition and hygiene while promoting a sustainable environment.

Why Should Your Business Participate?

There is increased demand on food outlets to provide nutritious food in a clean and safe environment. The Golden Plate Award gives your business the opportunity to:

Be recognised and acknowledged for meeting community demands for healthier food alternatives
Be acknowledged for excellence in hygiene and food handling
Increase your business profile through promotional opportunities offered by Monash Council
Contribute to good community health and wellbeing

Who Can Participate

Retail food premises within Monash that serve a meal for immediate consumption and fall into one of the following five categories:

Restaurants
Cafes
Takeaway / Bakeries
School Canteens / Child Care Centres
Aged Care Facilities / Hospital Kitchens

How The Award Operates

To be eligible for a Golden Plate Award your food premises must achieve excellence in the following standards:

Healthy Food Options
Hygiene and Food Handling
A choice of one or more of the following:
Sun Protection, Alcohol Awareness, Waste Management and Energy and Water Efficiency.

Council staff are available to provide advice on each of these standards. More information is also available in the Participant's Kit.

How to Participate

It is free to participate in the Golden Plate Award.

To apply for an award simply complete and return an application form (available from Council's Environmental Health Department - Ph. 9518 3540) by 5pm on 28 August 2009.
You will then be sent a Participant's Kit and an Environmental Health Officer will contact you to arrange a mutually convenient time to assess your food premises.

Monash Council encourages all eligible retail food outlets to apply for a Golden Plate Award.

Benefits To Your Business

First prize for the top food premises in each of the five categories is:

Free 12-month membership to the 'Monash Business Awards' (MBA). This is a group of Monash business people whose aim is to promote business success and excellence. Membership allows you to attend regular functions that provide the opportunity to meet, network and exchange ideas.
A Gold Framed Award to display at your food business.

All recipients of a Golden Plate Award will be invited to an award ceremony with the Mayor, plus:

All entrants who pass the award criteria will be presented with a framed certificate to display in their business
Free promotional opportunities in Monash Council's 'Golden Plate Award Winners' brochure
Free promotional opportunities in Monash Council's newsletter and website
