Diversity and Discrimination

Victoria is a multicultural state that is home to people of many nationalities, cultures and beliefs. According to the Equal Opportunity Commission of Victoria, almost half of all Victorians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas. We also have the freedom to choose our religion, culture and lifestyle. Victoria celebrates diversity.

Discrimination occurs when someone is treated less fairly based on his or her age, gender, race, sexual orientation, marital status, appearance, physical disability, culture or beliefs. Such forms of discrimination are not only hurtful to the person being discriminated against but they can also be illegal.

Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco

A drug is any substance that brings about physical and/or psychological changes in the body. This includes alcohol and tobacco.

Drugs can be divided into two categories; legal and illegal drugs. Some legal drugs can assist the body's natural functions, such as prescription and pharmaceutical medications, however all drugs, legal and illegal, have the potential to be very dangerous. Although alcohol and tobacco are legal for Victorians over the age of 18, these legal drugs can also have very serious side effects.

Illegal drugs are illegal for a reason. Not only can they be addictive and have a range of side effects, but illegal drugs are produced in backyard laboratories and have no standards they must meet. That means by using illegal drugs, there is no guarantee of what you are putting into your body or what effect it may have.

According to the Australian Drug Foundation, drug use (including alcohol and tobacco use) is a factor in about one in five of all deaths in Australia.

The following web sites provide further information about drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, and suggest where to go for support if you or someone you know has a problem with drugs.
